ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Renee and Michael Burke have been a travel-writing team for decades and over the years they’ve visited all 159 counties and have been promoting rural Georgia communities since 1982, when they published Georgia Highlands Quarterly. Later the couple published Retirement Living Georgia, the state’s first retirement lifestyle magazine. Georgia’s Best Retirement Places came in 1995 and a few years later they published Georgia’s Best Vacation, Relocation & Retirement Places. That same year, the Burkes introduced www.GeorgiasBest.com to the world and before long, Southern Living magazine picked up on it in 2000, as “one of the Southeast’s best travel sites.” Next came www.RetirementLivingGeorgia.com, where until very recently the couple provided a public service site for retirees.

While these brief county profiles barely scratch the surface, they are a primer for learning all about Georgia’s best retirement places. Several counties featured in the original Georgia Highlands Quarterly in 1982 are today still high on their selection list. Essentially, the state’s vast geography provides a rich diversity with its rolling countryside flourishing with classic Hometown America, the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains extending into North Georgia, numerous picturesque lakes and even a scenic marshland and coastal area.
